1. What is the commitment that’s expected to play competitive soccer?

Season is a 1 year commitment consisting of Fall & Spring Seasons. The annual commitment begins April and runs through March of the following year.Playing on a competitive soccer team requires a high level of commitment from both players and families. Players benefit from intensive training in the technical, tactical, mental, and fitness components of the game.Players are expected to attend all trainings and games during the season. Most Fall teams typically finish their “league” seasons in mid-late November. Teams also compete in State or National Cup, these tournaments typically finish in late January/early February depending on age group and competitive level. These teams will also generally play a spring season from March thru early June. Teams will compete in generally 3-5 tournaments during the summer months which helps coaches and players develop in preparation for the fall league season.

2. Can a player play with a team that is older than his or her age group?

In most cases, FC Valencia will strive to have players play on an age pure team. Age pure means that all the players will be the same age within the cutoff dates of each age group. With the introduction of US Soccer’s age group guidelines, this is determined based on the year the player was born. These decisions are typically based upon a player’s demonstrated ability to contribute as a “top – half” player on the older team and approval by the club’s director of coaching. There may, however, be some exceptions to these guidelines. It should be noted that players that come from a school together may be in different age groups as it is based upon an age cut-off date and not by grade.

3. How many players will be selected for each team?

There will typically be about 10-12 players on a roster for younger teams (between the ages of 7 & 11), while older’s (ages 12+) will have rosters of 14-17 players.

4. When will players find out if they have made a team?

FC Valencia will do what it can to expedite the notification process, but it does take time. After tryouts finish, coaches work quickly to secure commitments from players chosen during tryouts. Player’s invited to join one of our teams will receive an email along with a phone call typically within a week of trying out. Coaches will then submit their rosters to the club for processing. Rosters will be posted on the FC Valencia website along with any open roster spots. Tryout dates to be announced by December 1st for the following season.

5. How will players find out if they have made the team, and when will they have to commit to the team?

Only players invited to participate on teams will be contacted by the club. In an effort to expedite the process of extending invitations and securing commitments, initial invitations to join teams will be communicated via e-mail to the parents of the players offered spots. Parents will be asked to respond to e-mail invitations within 48 hours, but an immediate response is preferred. Any family that does not respond to the e-mail invitation will receive a follow-up phone call.U8,U9, U10 & U11*New- age groups, players will be selected to a pool of players. All players invited to join the pool will receive an invitation. Team formation will still occur as normal but this will allow for players to train together on age group play dates so teams can be confirmed by mid-Feb.U12 and older teams, players earning invitations to play on teams will be contacted within a week.FC Valencia will not contact players who are not invited to join teams unless the coach has made a training recommendation. Training recommendations allow select player’s not picked in the initial tryout to train with the team. Typically these ‘trainers’ are moved onto the official roster with a 4-6 week period.Families of accepted players will receive instructions from their respective team managers for registering online with their teams. Players must be registered online by April 1st and paid the initial deposit.

6. After tryouts, if my child is offered a roster spot, will I know exactly what team he/she will play on during the season?

FC Valencia strives to find the best training and playing fit for every player. We recognize that players develop at different rates, and the 5-6 months between tryouts and our teams’ first games can bring significant changes in a player’s soccer ability, physical growth, commitment and/or desire. We also recognize, from years of experience, that an inappropriate team assignment can lead to an unsatisfactory season for the player. As such, FC Valencia has a policy of continued player assessment in Spring. For younger age groups (U8, U9, U10 and U11 teams) our professional coaches will select a pool of players at tryouts. Players in the pool will train together until a specified time in Spring, at which time our Team Coaches will place every player in the pool on one of our competitive teams. Initial team placement for U8, U9,U10 and U11 teams shall take place by no later than June 1st. For U12 and older teams, we will form our teams with full rosters immediately after tryouts. We reserve the right to form teams immediately after tryouts when appropriate at any age.

7. What happens if a player doesn’t make a team?

FC Valencia Coaches will email players who do not make teams to inform them.

8. For younger players who do not make a competitive team, can he or she still play in our youth league?

Yes. One of the goals of FC Valencia is to provide a developmental environment which provides training opportunities to all. Players who don’t make one of competitive teams are encouraged to still participate in our recreational program, which begins at age 5. The FCV-YSL youth program starts the introduction of our developmental curriculum. Many of the player’s that participate in our youth program move on to one of our competitive teams. For older players, we offer player development camps and clinics throughout the year (please visit the Camps and Programs section of this website) to learn more. We also can recommend private training with one of our professional coaches.

9. What is the FC Valencia TDP Program?

All of our competitive teams participate in our technical development program. TDP is an exceptional skills training program which is included with your standard club fees and provides individual technical development. TDP is a collaboration between FC Valencia and SWAP (Soccer with a Purpose) and combines two programs that work tirelessly to improve our players’ individual skills. This program is tailored for our competitive players and allows them to expand their skills and comfort around various aspects of the game. These sessions are provided in addition to our standard team training which each player receives twice a week with their primary coach. TDP allows us to target technical components of player skill development which are difficult to include in their standard team-based training session. We are continuously looking for ways to strengthen our training programs. TDP is an example of our commitment to proactive player development – recognizing early, those areas that our players need additional work.
