The coaching staff at FC Valencia includes some of the brightest and most engaging coaches in Southern California. Our coaches operate to the highest standards of technical, tactical, and age appropriate training. It is the mission of our coaching and development staff to build a history of success on and off the pitch. Our coaches are always here to help our players reach their goals, whether it’s playing Varsity HS, Collegiate, or playing Professionally.
Our club is not only considered competitive for our players but also our coaches. We continuously strive and encourage our staff to continue their coaching education along with implementing modern training methods and teaching philosophy. All with the core mission of developing young athletes to succeed and reach their fullest potential.

Charles Martinez
Founder & Director of Coaching

Charles Martinez has coached soccer at various levels for well over 20 years. Charles holds a United States Soccer Federation (USSF) National “A” Professional coaching license and will begin his third year as Women’s Assistant Coach for the nationally ranked, Western Conference champions at College of the Canyons. He has also trained teams at the Women’s Pro-Am level as well as both boys and girls Varsity High School soccer programs at Golden Valley, Panorama, Hoover, Burroughs, Bellarmine-Jefferson, and Providence.

Player and team development is Charles’ focus when it comes to coaching Club soccer. He stresses hard work and discipline in conjunction with maintaining high grades in school. His Club experience includes training and leading teams of all ages including prior work with the North Valley Soccer Club, Crescenta Valley Soccer Club, Los Angeles Futbol Club (LAFC Chelsea); and Burbank Red Machine (Director of Coaching).

Consistent, current and ongoing coaching education is a key element of Charles’ leadership philosophy and he believes in utilizing every educational opportunity to enhance coaching skills, knowledge and abilities. As a component of continuing education for his USSF National A license, Charles joined the USSF coaching staff for training in Italy with the staff of Roma, ACF Fiorentina, Inter de Milan, AC Milan and the Italian National Team. Additionally, he previously traveled to England to train with the Chelsea professional and youth coaching staff. Charles holds a Brazil USA (BRUSA) International Soccer Institute D-License certification.

Martinez was trained and played professionally in Ecuador with the Deportivo Cuenca (1st Division), the Ecuadorian U17 National Team, the Universidad de Cuenca College Team, and at Los Angeles City College. Charles received the City of Glendale Character and Ethics Community Award, Glendale Fire Chief’s Annual commendation and a commendation from LA County Supervisor Michael Antonovich for community service.

Charles is a firm believer in continuing coaching education. Every couple years he travels with USSF International Coaching Development Program. This year he flew to Brussels, Belgium to take part in the program. These coaching development workshops expose U.S. coaches to foreign federations and clubs. He was joined with a group of approximately 36 coaches from the US and other participating countries to interact directly with top-level coaches, administrators and players from some of the best clubs in the world.

Coach “AJ” Adonay joins FC Valencia as the Asst. Director of Coaching, and will oversee the development of the boys program.
“We are thrilled to have AJ and his wife, Karen, along with their children joining the FC Valencia soccer family,” said Snyder. “After spending the last few years at RSC, AJ brings a wealth of experience that will have an immediate impact on our program. As a club, we are focused on strengthening our coaching staff and we’re all very excited to have Coach Adonay join us. AJ has nearly 20 years of coaching experience along with a track record of developing himself with his craft. He’s the epitome of what we’re looking for as we continue to strengthen our program in the Santa Clarita Valley.”

Rafa brings a tremendous wealth of experience and professionalism to this program. With over 20 years of playing and coaching experience, he brings to the training field the knowledge and ability to help players  reach their full playing potential. Player development has always been Rafa’s passion and philosophy. This is why he created the SWAP training program. “Having spent 12 years coaching and training  youth club soccer, I’ve learned to identify the needs of the young soccer player. The challenge is to use the right tools that can help each individual become motivated enough to do everything it takes to achieve their personal goals. Justin Lundin
Coaching Staff

Justin Lundin enters his sixth season at the helm of the COC women’s soccer program in 2014. In five years as head coach, Lundin has led the team to a 69-23-17 record with a career win percentage of .711. Lundin has recorded winning seasons each year since being named head coach, and has led the women’s program to three straight Western State Conference Championships in 2011, 2012 and 2013. Lundin is a graduate of California State University, Northridge, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology with an emphasis in physical education, and a master’s degree in kinesiology with an emphasis in exercise physiology. Justin and his wife, Susan, have four children, Grace, Anneliese, Kieran, and Gabrielle.

Jimmie Avalos
Coaching Staff

Jimmie has been coaching club soccer in Santa Clarita Valley for 18 years. He coached boy’s soccer at Canyon High School for several years and collegiately for 12 years. Avalos has seen the growth of club soccer in Santa Clarita and is a product himself. He has had the privilege of coaching and mentoring many young soccer players. Many of these players have gone on to play in college and several are now college coaches themselves.

Avalos is a graduate of California State University of Northridge, where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Physical Education, and a Master’s Degree in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Pedagogy. Avalos currently holds his USSF “D” coaching license and plans on pursing his Advanced National Diploma this summer.

Avalos believes that with hard work, dedication and a nurturing environment that a young player can be successful. He prides himself with being a teacher of the game of soccer and more importantly a good role model. Avalos is constantly looking to challenge himself by finding new and modern methodologies to help challenge his players. Avalos and his Wife Michelle reside in Santa Clarita with their three girls, Gina, Isabell and Elena.

Coach Scott Zazueta began playing soccer at a very young age, and began playing club soccer while living in Arizona. Scott played for Sereno F.C., a top 10 ranked club in the United States. While playing at Sereno, he helped his team capture 4 consecutive State Cup titles, and a second place finish in Nationals. His Sereno team was coached by Paul Mariner, a former English Premier League and England National Team player, MLS Coach and current ESPN Television Analyst. Coach Scott, later returned to his hometown of Santa Clarita and played Varsity soccer at Valencia High School, and was a captain his Junior and Senior years. Scott, continued his playing career at Cal State University, Stanislaus; NCAA Div. II school.

Scott began coaching and training at a young age. Scott was an assistant manager for the Lil’ Kickers, youth soccer development program and also coached at Saugus High School. He coached at Saugus High School for 4 years, where he coached the girls JV team to one undefeated season and 2 league championships. In 4 years of coaching at Saugus, the girls JV team lost only 3 games. Scott was also an assistant to the Varsity team when the Saugus girls won the CIF title. Scott has been coaching in club soccer since 2010.

Coach Rolando has over twelve years coaching experience beginning with his own children Priscilla and Destinney, now 16 & 14. Taking on the challenge in the younger years of developmental soccer, Rolando has always striven to maintain a fun and challenging environment, implementing philosophy and a healthy dose of teamwork skills along the way. Rolando has a solid understanding of the game and focuses on the continuous growth of his players. His techniques are geared towards development of both the player, and the skills necessary to be a successful athlete. With great success, Rolando is proud to of coached countless youth teams both on and off the pitch.

Coach Rolando has been trained and played competitively in a wide array of sports. Beginning with boxing, baseball, Fùtbol, BMX, power weightlifting, and track to name a few. Rolando brings his experience and training as an athlete in a fashion that best supports the sport of soccer and team chemistry. As an avid athlete, he’s excelled in all challenges put before him. As his coaching career began also born was the passion for the “beautiful game”. His commitment to excel as a coach at the competitive club level has ignited his passion to accomplish those challenges again with FC Valencia.

Rolando’s coaching education includes numerous training and coaching certifications. He frequents coaching seminars, & symposiums all focused on soccer.

Rolando has served in the local AYSO region as a Player Evaluation Administrator, All Star Scout, and as an All Star Coach.

Rolando is a member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

Passion, positive energy; is what you have to stress to instill in young athletes the will to never give up no matter what the challenge is; maintaining mental toughness is key to success on the pitch and in life!

Coach Katie graduated locally from Canyon High School, and went onto play soccer with a full scholarship to (CSUN) California State University Northridge Division I Women’s soccer team.

Katie graduated with a degree in Kinesiology. During her NCAA collegiate career, she played four years in the USL W-league for the Santa Clarita Blue Heat, our local women’s semi-professional team.

Post college, she was picked up by the Houston Aces of Texas, playing in the  UWS League playing professionally. During her time in Texas she coached various age groups and developed a passion for teaching the game. Most notably as an assistant for the women’s semi-pro team Houston South Select.

Katie joins FC Valencia for the 2018-19 season as we enter our 5th year.

Jonathyn Lomeli

The Cal State Fullerton men’s soccer team has added former Claremont Mudd-Scripps College assistant coach Jonathyn Lomeli to its coaching staff as the Head Goalkeeper coach.

Coach Lomeli comes to Fullerton after a two-year stint with the Claremont Mudd-Scripps College program where his main priority was working and developing the goalkeepers to elite standards.

Lomeli played four years at the University of La Verne from 2009-2013 where he holds record for most minutes played in career as a goalkeeper and is top 5 in school’s shutout history. Lomeli also played in the U.S USL/PDL with the franchise Los Angeles Misioneros for three years where he made his debut on July 15, 2010 vs. So Cal Seahorses.

A 2013 graduate from the University of La Verne, Lomeli holds a degree in International Business and Language with a concentration in Spanish along with a USSF ‘D” License and a NSCAA Goalkeeping Diploma 1&2.
