Coaching Education – U.S. Soccer International Coaching Program
by Charles Martinez

“If you are not willing to learn, no one can help you.
If you are determined to learn, no one can stop you.” – Zig Ziglar

From March 12-20th our Director of Coaching, Charles Martinez flew to Brussels, Belgium to take part in U.S. Soccer’s international coaching development program. This coaching development workshop exposes U.S. coaches to foreign federations and clubs. The group of approximately 36 coaches from the US and other participating countries interact directly with top-level coaches, administrators and players from some of the best clubs in the world.

This hands-on technical study in Belgium allows coaches to develop strong connections with leading countries around the world. Each component of the workshop focused on engagement with recognized coaches and their player development programs from clubs. During the international workshop, Coach Charles visited the Belgium Football Federation, Club Brugge, FC Anderlecht, and Ajax of Amsterdam to specifically study their youth programs and methodologies.

This trip was an amazing learning experience. Everything from learning the history of each of the clubs we interacted with to learning the true strength of the clubs youth programs. Each of these clubs continually produce world class talent including names most of our young players already know, for example: Roman Lukaku and Vincent Company

From the time we landed, the experience was eye opening. Starting with a presentation at the Anderlecht training complex by their Director of Player Development, Jean Kindermans. After his presentation he excused himself to change from his suit into his training warm-ups. He than carried out a session for us with their u14s. The presentation was amazing and his session was exactly what I was hoping to see. This was the kind of experience I was hoping for and it gave me lots of things to consider as I bring my knowledge back to share with FC Valencia coaches and our exceptional young players!

Over the course of the next few weeks I will share some of my experiences with you, stay tuned for more!
